Link: What Einstein and Bill Gates teach us about time travel

What Einstein and Bill Gates Teach Us About Time Travel

Time travel has long been a staple of science fiction books and movies. But will we ever be able to build a time machine and beam ourselves backward and forward in time in real life?

In some sense, of course, we're all time travelers: We move forward in time from one minute to the next. But going back in time, whether to avoid some mistake or perhaps to repeat it, is something far more elusive. And for those who yearn to see what the world will look like a century or a millennium from now, the slow tick of your watch as time passes just doesn't cut it.

The theoretical underpinnings of time travel date back to 1905, when Albert Einstein wrote down his special theory of relativity that showed space and time are intimately linked, and to 1916, when Einstein's general theory of relativity showed that space and time are malleable — that is, they respond to the presence of matter or energy by warping, bending, expanding, and contracting. By extension, this means if one can imagine space being filled with some exotic form of energy, then space and time could warp in a way so that time, as well as space, could bend back upon themselves like circles, allowing one to move forward in a straight line and still return to one's starting point in both space and time.

Related: Waves May Let Us See the Big Bang's Earliest Moments

But even after thinking about the time travel problem for more than a century, physicists haven't advanced the ball very far. We recognize that while Einstein's equations do allow for round-trip time travel (at least in principle), other physics considerations probably rule out creating the exotic forms of energy that would make it possible.

The first person to write down a mathematical solution of the general relativity equations that described an exotic type of space-time that might permit time travel was mathematician Kurt Gödel, a close colleague of Einstein's at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J. He presented his result in a scientific paper that he gave Einstein as a birthday present on his 70th birthday in 1949.

But just being able to determine that general relativity allows configurations of space and time in which forward or backward time travel is possible doesn't mean those configurations can actually be created. Since general relativity implies that the configuration of space-time is determined by the nature of the matter and energy within it, one needs to determine whether it's possible to create the appropriate type of matter and energy in the laboratory.

Is it possible? Probably not, but we don't know for sure.

[How Scientists Verified One of Einstein's Most Controversial Theories]

Perhaps the easiest way to understand the problem is to examine the simplest example of a theoretical time machine: a "wormhole" — essentially a shortcut through a curved space, like a tunnel under a mountain (or for our purposes here a tunnel connecting two distant points in space). That's why I chose this example when discussing time travel two decades ago in my book "The Physics of Star Trek."

So imagine a wormhole one of its mouths moving through space in a big circle, at, say, 95 percent of the speed of light. Now, special relativity tells us that observers in relative motion experience time differently, such that — to a ground-based observer — clocks on a fast-moving rocket ship would tick more slowly than clocks on the ground.

Thus an observer riding on the wormhole's mouth as it zooms through space might determine from his or her clock that the round-trip took a week. But an observer at the other end of the wormhole, at rest in the background space, would look at his clock and determine that the trip took, say, three years. If the second observer then moves through the wormhole and comes out the other end, he or she will arrive to meet his or her colleague at the other end — and discover that the time is now three years before he entered the wormhole in the first place!

Are wormholes possible in real life? The answer is … we don't know! We do know that no stable wormholes can exist if the only forms of matter and energy are the ones we've been able to create in laboratories: In that case, each mouth of the wormhole would collapse to form a black hole in a time shorter than it would take to traverse the wormhole. But if it were possible to create some material with very peculiar characteristics — namely a material that was gravitationally repulsive — it might be able to hold a wormhole open against gravitational collapse. And that would bring time travel a step closer to reality.

[Can Physics Explain the Origin of Life on Earth?]

All the evidence so far suggests that it is probably impossible for us to create such a material. Yet ultimately, it is the limitation of our understanding of general relativity, especially in the domain where quantum mechanical effects might be significant, that currently prohibits us from proving the impossibility of building a time machine.

In other words, time travel is not yet ruled out in our universe.

Even so, most physicists now working would bet against the possibility of time travel, not merely because of the practical difficulties of generating the necessary conditions to allow it but also because of the implications of time travel if it becomes possible.

Related: These ER Docs Invented a Real Star Trek Tricorder

For example, if were to go back in time and change the past, we would also change the future. This situation is a common plot twist of modern science fiction (including "Star Trek" and the film series "Back to the Future"). And it leads to a host of possible paradoxes, including what would happen if you went back in time and killed your grandmother before she gave birth to your mother. If your mother was never born, of course, then you would never have been born. But in that case, how did you go back in time and kill your grandmother in the first place?

One possible resolution of this paradox would be that the only kind of time travel allowed by the laws of physics is travel in which you are doomed to repeat the same sequence of events again and again, no matter how much you'd like to alter things. Time would travel in a circle instead of a straight line. As in the movie "Groundhog Day," you would be doomed to repeat events for all eternity.

Traveling forward in time and returning also produces problems of the sort seen in "Back to the Future." As I have pointed out previously, the fact that Bill Gates remains the richest person in the world argues against the existence of a forward-and-back time machine. For if you could jump forward even a single day and then return to the present time, within a year you could make investments in the stock market that would turn even a small sum into an astronomically large one. Gates's mere $80 billion fortune would seem minuscule.

It took the United States as well as Russia and other countries years to achieve early and crude time travel techniques. Billions of dollars were spent on research and thousands of stupid wannabes volunteered to time travel. Nearly all of them died and never made it back to their original jump point.

I’m aware of two or three people that died in the past, because they were killed by animals or the environment or the hostile inhabitants. Others were lost in the past and had to endure many reincarnations to get back to present time, why because the connection the governments had to the past somehow became disconnected and the individuals were not retrievable ever again. Many of these current time travel wannabes are the individuals that may have been lost in past time or suffer from delusions that time travel is much like getting on an airplane, sitting there and in a few hours reached the destination of their choice. This is not how time travel works at this time and space in history.

I remember a story back in the 1950s when IBM was trying to refine teleportation which is a key element to real time travel. Teleportation needs to be perfected before you can go to the next step which is teleporting through time and space. The issues that IBM had were as follows: They had developed the electron equipment to teleport objects across the room. But the problem was it would mirror image the items teleported. Their experimentation used good-quality China plates with designs and manufacturer’s information on the bottom of the plate. For a couple years they could not teleport plates that would not mirror-image itself. They even tried small animals in which turned out to be a disaster, when it ended up at the receiving portal the animal mirror imaged and the guts and blood was on the outside and inside was the fur.
We've all been there. You're about to cut into a loaf of bread and there it is. A fuzzy blue spot of mold lurking on the surface of that baguette you just bought yesterday. While most of us were taught to just cut around the mold and eat the rest in order to not waste food, it's time to stop that bad habit.

"We don't recommend cutting mold off of bread, because it's a soft food," Marianne Gravely, a senior technical information specialist for the United States Department of Agriculture told NPR. "With soft food, it's very easy for the roots [of the mold], or the tentacles, or whatever creepy word you want to use, to penetrate [deeper into the food]."

Basically, the mold spore's roots go much farther into bread than our eyes can see.

Gross, right?

There might be some wiggle room when it comes to sliced bread that comes in a bag, according to Gravely. If you can tell that one end of a long loaf is clean on the inside and exterior, it's safe to keep. But if you're not sure, just toss it out.

"I have seen mold spread from one slice to the next," Gravely told NPR. "I'm sure some people would really want to press the situation, but bread is cheap. Go buy some more."

Bread isn't the only food that you can't just cut off the moldy bits and eat the rest. Jam, soft fruits and lunch meat also should be thrown away once mold is spotted on any part of it.

There is some good news though. Harder foods like salami, carrots and hard cheeses can be salvaged by cutting off the visible mold since its roots can't move as quickly through their tough surfaces. Just to be safe, Gravely recommends cutting off an additional inch of food around the mold.

	View attachment 151

When I was in college, a friend of mine entered a competition to win a Michael Kors purse. It would look great on her if she won, and in true girl group style, we were all excited to borrow it. The only problem? She'd have to shovel hot dogs into her face for about 5 minutes to win it.

The magic number for the hot dog eating contest was somewhere around 15, we guessed - a feat that seemed reasonable. She'd always had a big appetite (her late-night McDonald's order was two McChickens, a McDouble, and a medium order of fries), but even this was a stretch. Still, she'd had her eye on the bag, and was determined to add it to her closet.

She spent the days leading up to the competition fasting to ensure her dominance. Dominate she did, and after downing eight hot dogs in five minutes (we were ambitious), they declared her the winner. She promptly strutted home with her new bag over shoulder - only stopping to throw up every few paces. She was sick for the next two days, but by golly, she'd won the bag.

For some reason, food competitions have taken serious hold in American culture. Thanks to the annual 4th of July hot dog competition at Nathan's Famous on Coney Island, and hit shows like Man Vs. Food, food feats have become symbolic acts of cultural significance, with spectators crowding around and cheering the stunt of morbid obesity with morbid curiosity, like a car crash you can't look away from. The act has now morphed into a full blown 'sport' with ESPN coverage, but there's a dark side to these competitions.

Aside from the no-brainer health risks of weight gain and vomiting, competitive eating and drinking pose serious threats to contestants' safety. Developing serious health complications post-competition is nothing new, but could it be reaching new heights? Tragically, just last weekend, two competitors in two separate contests died from eating contests in the same weekend. The devastating accidents are just two examples of a larger trend; according to the Eat Feats Database, more than 20 eating-competition deaths have been reported since 2010 alone.

But the danger isn't just in the amount of food, either; scary-spicy food competitions like hot sauce challenges promise freebies and glory to patrons who can gorge themselves on spicy foods, but the repercussions aren't always as mild as having the spice sweats. In October of 2016, a man nearly died from a Ghost Pepper Challenge after uncontrollable heat-induced vomiting tore a hole in his esophagus. Doctors were able to repair the damage, but not before a two-week stay in the hospital, and several weeks of eating through a tube.

The dangers don't stop there, though. According to TIME, competitive eating can (and often does) cause irreparable damage. In some cases, the stomach will stretch so intensely that it can't return back to its normal size. This usually triggers uncontrollable nausea and vomiting, which can persist until a gastrectomy (read: stomach surgery) is able restore the participant's ability to eat normally. Other risks include choking, food poisoning, intoxication, water poisoning (yes, it's a thing), a torn esophagus, burst blood vessels, the irritation of idle food allergies, diarrhea, and death.

Major League Eating serves as the governing body of most eating competitions, and they maintain that safety is a top priority for any and all food challenges. Participants must be 18 or older to eat in a sanctioned MLE event, and most contests (sanctioned or otherwise) are careful to ensure participants sign liability waivers before participating. One would think the need for a release would serve as a forewarning measure, but if the number of reported incidents (and the likely droves of unreported injuries), victory T-shirts, and cautionary tales are any indication, it hasn't yet. It's not just food, though. Binge drinking competitions are still common in communities across the country (and probably always will be), with everything from beer to milk, even water playing the poison. College campuses have reportedly cracked down on binge contests - evenly seemingly innocuous ones like chugging water - to keep students safe. But how is it that the need for regulation slips away once we get beyond the school grounds? Do we really need someone to tell us that going HAM on hot dogs is super scary, and a totally terrible idea? As real-life grown-ups, shouldn't we know better?

It doesn't take long for the saying, "it's all fun and games until someone gets hurt" to start sounding like an empty platitude - especially when someone's life is in danger - and I'd say we're definitely there with binge eating. But it seems that the rise in incidents might finally be earning eating competitions their due consideration. Here's hoping we can learn from these accidents, as senseless tragedies like these are just too much to stomach.
